Prepare:

  • Walking shoes
  • Pencils (preferably led)
  • Paper (small square pieces about 5cmx5cm)
  • Clip board
  • Picture cards of insects
Age: Adapt the activity for any age.  This activity is perfect  for children of all ages that are interested in living things.

This is a fabulous way to help children think creatively and become more involved in the story telling and creating process.

  1. Display the picture cards of insects on the floor/table.
  2. Name the insects, recall the names of the insects, and discuss how each one is special.
  3. Say, now we will be going on a nature walk to look for some insects.
  4. Say, we will be drawing them, and their body parts.
  5. Say, we will be looking at what makes them special.
  6. Go on the nature walk.
Looking Back:

  • For question 1, have a variety of insects, e.g. can fly, crawls, colorful, etc to enable the children to classify them.
  • The children can learn the sign language symbol to match the name of each insect. This could make a great matching game to play before the lesson.
  • For question 2, lessons on the parts of insects before hand will give more confidence to the child when doing this.
  • You can choose to go to the same place you went on the nature walk before, or choose a different site. Though for consistency, I feel it’s best to return to the same place because the children may notice change, see the same place in a different perspective, and fulfills their sense of order.
  • The children will use led pencil, and later in part 9 they will color the insect. Use the pictures as a guide for which colors to use.

Looking forward:

  • Give children opportunities to look in books for pictures, stories and information on insects.
  • Ask the children to classify pictures of insects, based on their characteristics.
  • Children can draw a picture of their own ‘mural’ design on paper, and draw details such as the insects and where they live.
  • Go on other drawing expeditions such as finding and drawing small stones, small twigs, leaves, etc, each expedition seek to find one of these. This will develop observation skills, and fulfill the child’s sense of order.
  • Go on another expedition with color pencils, and note the colors of flowers. Draw and color them.
